Im Verlauf seiner 30-jährigen Karriere haben den Gitarristen und Sänger Coco Montoya sein explosives Gitarrenspiel und sein beseelter Gesang weltweit in die obersten Bereiche des Bluesrock gebracht. Von seinen frühen Tagen als Schlagzeuger bis zu seinem heutigen Status als einer der besten Gitarristen und Sänger der Bluesrock-Szene, hat sich Montoya diesen Ruf all die Jahre durch seine harte Arbeit und seinem unermüdlichen Touren erarbeitet und gefestigt. Und alles begann damit, das er Mitte der 70er auf Albert Collins traf und das Angebot bekam bei ihm als Schlagzeuger einzusteigen. Albert fand sofort gefallen an Montoyas Art und wurde sein musikalischer Mentor. Und er brachte seinem Schüler die Geheimnisse seines eigenen „eisig-heißen“ Bluesguitar-Stils bei. Fünf Jahre später entdeckte John Mayall Coco auf einer Jamsession und war überwältigt. Er nahm Ihn in die legendären Bluesbreakers auf, und das führte dazu, das Montoya in den folgenden zehn Jahren mit diesen um die ganze Welt tourte. Seit seinem Austritt bei den Bluesbreakers und dem Beginn seiner Solokarriere, hat Montoya mit seinem Neuesten (I Want It All Back, RUF 1153) insgesamt sechs Solo-Alben veröffentlicht, und hat ununterbrochen weltweit auf den Bühnen der Clubs, Konzerthallen und großen Festivals gestanden. COCO MONTOYA
Californiano di Santa Monica, classe ’51, Coco Montoya è un veterano della scena blues americana. Nella seconda metà degli anni settanta è stato ingaggiato dal grande Albert Collins che lo ha quasi adottato, aiutandolo a sviluppare la sua tecnica. Lasciato il gruppo, Coco ha fatto il barista per alcuni anni disilluso dalla scena musicale, suonando per divertimento nel tempo libero. Nell’84 il padre del blues inglese John Mayall lo ha ascoltato casualmente in un bar e lo ha inserito immediatamente nella nuova formazione dei Bluesbreakers, affiancandolo a Walter Trout. La coppia ha funzionato benissimo per dieci anni con tre album in studio e centinaia di concerti che hanno migliorato notevolmente lo stile di entrambi; poi Montoya ha intrapreso una carriera solista firmando per la Blind Pig con la quale ha inciso tre dischi, seguiti da altri tre per la Alligator, prima di passare alla tedesca Ruf.

Over the course of his 30-year career, guitarist and vocalist Coco Montoya’s explosive guitar playing and soul-driven voice have propelled him to the upper reaches of the blues-rock world. From his early days as a drummer to his current status as one of the top-drawing guitarists and vocalists on the blues-rock scene, Montoya has forged his reputation through years of hard work and constant touring. And it all started with a chance meeting in the mid-1970s with legendary bluesman Albert Collins, who offered Montoya a gig as his drummer. Albert took an immediate liking to Montoya, becoming his mentor and teaching his new protégé secrets of the Collins „icy hot“ style of blues guitar. Five years later, John Mayall happened to catch Montoya at a jam session and was blown away. This led to Montoya’s touring the world for ten years with the legendary Bluesbreakers. Since stepping out as a bandleader in 1993, Montoya has released four solo albums and has performed non-stop at clubs, concert halls and major festivals all over the world.
